Replacement Upvc Window Handles

Most replacement windows handles made of upvc come with everything you require. However should you find that your old handle was secured with pins or screws they will need to removed. Then, remove the'snap-in' cover on the handle's base.

You'll need to determine what kind of window lock and handle you want to replace. This is important!

Espag

Espag handles are a multipoint lock system that is used to secure casement windows, such as uPVC and wooden double glazing. They have seven millimetre square spindles that is fitted into the gearbox of the window made of uPVC. When the handle is turned, it opens with a series of locks that run around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles are also referred to as shootbolt handles and offer additional security when compared to the standard single point lock that is used on older window frames.

They are available in a variety of different designs, including inline and cranked handles that can be used either left or right hand operation. You can also find various sleek ergonomically designed handles that are designed to enhance both the feeling of the handle as well as how it looks on your windows.

If you're looking to replace your existing uPVC window handle with an espag handle, you will need to identify the size of the spindle that is fitted and measure this from the base of the handle in order to get the right replacement. This measurement is known as step height and can assist you in finding the ideal uPVC handle for your home.

You may need to remove any screw covers that protect the screws that hold the handle in place and if this is the case, you can use the screwdriver or pliers to take out the pins holding the handle. Once this is done then you must disassemble the handle by taking out the screws or pins that secure the spindle, and then pulling away from the window.

When you have the handle removed, you'll be in a position to access the locking mechanism inside the frame of the window and remove the cockspur wedge block that is fitted adjacent to the handle to allow the window to open. The new uPVC handles you ordered should be able slide onto the cockspur block, and then into the handle spindle to allow the window to reopen. If you want to be sure that your uPVC handles are securely secured, it's best to replace the cockspur block the brand new block.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles are usually found on older uPVC and aluminium windows. The handle closes and turns into a wedge-shaped plastic catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches which are also covered in this section.) These handles are available in lockable and nonlockable versions. They are available in a range of different nose heights to fit the existing frame.

The handle is secured with small triangle-shaped spur (spur) which is fixed to the frame. These are usually single-way handles, but a deadlock with a locking mechanism can be fitted to provide additional security.

The replacement double glazed windows cockspur handles are easy to install. All you require is the correct backset and a brand new set (supplied). The backset is the distance from the baseplate of the window to the underside of the nose of the handle. As a general rule Aluminium window frames usually have a backset of 9mm, whereas UPVC employs a 21mm. There are many other variations though so it is important to take a measurement before purchasing the handle (see the video below for more details on how).

This kind of window handle can be substituted by simply unscrewing the existing handle and taking off the spindle, or in certain cases the whole handle assembly. The replacement double glazing window handle can then be screwed in place using two pozidriv screws. The pozidriv screw can be purchased in a brass or zinc finish, to match existing hardware. There is also a choice for a self-locking pozidriv screw.

Each handle has three packers, each of different thicknesses. These are neatly installed on the underside of handles and can be combined to create backsets as small as 9-13mm or as high as 21mm. Tilt and turn

Tilt and turn windows are a coveted European window design that has been around for a long time in Europe, but is only just starting to catch on in the US. They combine the functionality of three window styles into one: tilt, pivot, and in-swing. This makes them perfect for older homes as they can be used to provide a greater level of ventilation than standard window types.

When closed, tilt and turn windows lock like a normal fixed window. By turning the handle either 90@ or 180@, depending on the tilt-and-turn type of window, the sash will open inwards, and the window will turn inwards to allow air circulation. Tilt and turn windows are very secure. They are extremely difficult to open when they are locked in the closed position. They also have double seals which stop rainwater from entering your home when it is in the tilted position or in swing. This feature is particularly beneficial for older homes, where burglars tend to target traditional windows that can be opened by the side hinges.

Spade

There are several different types of handles that can be put in on windows with double-glazed upvc. The two main kinds are Espag handles and Cockspur handles, then there's also tilt and turn handles, spade or blade handles, and monkey tail handles. The type of handle you select will depend on your preferences and the type of windows you have.

To select the right replacement upvc window handle, it is important to know how your current handle is attached to the frame. This is known as handing and it is an important element to be aware of when shopping online. Certain handle styles don't fit all windows. Some cockspur handles, for instance, are angled whereas others are straight and can be turned left or right.
