There is currently a nationwide shortage of medication to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing problems and a growing global demand.

Our service is able to provide private ADHD testing as an alternative to waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our assessment fees cover the cost of a single prescription.

Titration

A thorough evaluation of your ADHD symptoms will be conducted by an experienced consultant Psychiatrist. This includes a thorough medical history, as well as an assessment using the standard ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.

After your evaluation, you will be informed if medication would be beneficial for your particular situation. This will be discussed at your follow-up appointment (which could be in person, via video link or by phone). Your clinician will explain the different options available for you to take medication and if you decide to begin taking medication, we will suggest titrating the dose to maximize the benefits/side effects balance for you.

This process can take several weeks and involves gradually adjusting your child's dosage until the right balance has been achieved. It is not unusual to need to adjust three or four medications before finding the one that is best for your child's ADHD symptoms. It is essential for parents to be involved in this titration adhd medication process and keep a close eye on their child's behavior, so that they can let the doctor know whether the medication is working or causing side effects.

If you decide to return to NHS treatment you will be issued a private prescription for your medication. You will be required to pay at the pharmacy. This is not included in the consultation fee. You must attend six-monthly appointments to check your medications. This includes blood pressure and pulse measurements. Annual exams are also required.

Follow-up appointments

Once the evaluation has been completed you will be able to book follow up appointments with the psychiatrist, as appropriate. The appointment is usually done by video conference using zoom. However, in some circumstances, it might be possible for an audio-only appointment to be conducted (again at an additional cost).

In this session, we'll discuss any treatment options and come up with a unique ADHD medication titration program. This will include a review and discussion of your medication dose, as well as any adverse effects you may be experiencing. These titration sessions cost PS150 for face-toface sessions and PS60 via telephone or video consultation. The cost of medication is additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.

The psychiatrist will also ask you about your family background and the impact your ADHD symptoms impact your life, including any issues with relationships you may be having or other mental health problems that you may be experiencing. We recommend that if you are unsure of your preferences, you speak with your GP prior to booking your private examination. Certain providers have different guidelines regarding whether they require an GP letter. We also advise to check if your GP accepts a 'Shared Care Agreement which means that once you are discharged from the clinic you will be referred back to them for the prescription for medication.

Medication

For many people who seek a private diagnosis of ADHD treatment is a crucial element of their treatment. Finding a prescription from an NHS psychiatrist can be a hassle and time-consuming. If this occurs, the titration appointment will be included in their consultation fees and they will be given their medication on private prescription (see Consultation fees above). This could cost more than prescriptions from the NHS because the pharmacy will charge you for the medication.
