How to Replace window pane Window Panes

Glass

If your single-pane windows are outdated damaged, cracked or deteriorating replacing them with modern glass that is tempered or insulated can improve energy efficiency and reduce noise while maintaining the historic integrity of older homes. A majority of homeowners with hand tools can replace windows with ease. In addition to a replacement pane, the following components are required such as latex glazing putty; glazier's points; pliers; and the use of a heat gun to warm the old putty if required. Before starting, put on protective gloves and goggles since working with broken glass can cause injuries.

Begin by removing any remaining broken pieces of glass. This is best done using a pair of pliers, but a flathead screwdriver can also be used in a pinch. Use a wood chisel, or putty knife to get rid of any old putty remaining around the frame and window sash. Be careful not to break the window sash. Take your time and work slowly. Once you have removed all the old putty, prepare the window frame to accommodate the new pane.
