The system uses dual-laser LiDAR similar to the kind you'll find in self-driving vehicles and is able to scan up to 32 feet in 270 degrees. This means more precise mapping, faster response time, and higher cleaning accuracy.

It also comes with a rotating mopping mat constructed of chenille, which makes it easier to scrub hard-to-clean spots than conventional mopping. In my tests the X2 Omni washed its pad in less than a second and was ready to go. I noticed that it was more precise than other models that seemed to follow the grid of rooms. It was able to navigate my rooms' corners and edges, as well as create a "Zambani pattern" across the middle of the room. It returned to its OMNI Station regularly to empty the dust bin and clean the mop with hot water, before starting another task of cleaning.

However, it has a tendency to bump into things (including its own charging dock) and isn't always adept in negotiating rugs. It was good at collecting pet hair off bare floors. In our tests it was able to pick up 89.5% kitty litter.

Although it can be controlled via the app it's also controllable via the app. X8 Hybrid also comes with physical buttons on its base, which allow you to choose the cleaning mode and switch the robot off or on. You can also use these to set no-go zones and see maps in real-time. It's a bit chatty, as well, and will let you know what it plans to do next ("start cleaning") or alert you that something's not right (it does not have enough power to charge, for instance).

The A4s Pro is a bit expensive, but it's a great buy for people who want to be able to leave the house hands-free so they can get out and do other things or perform household chores. The A4s Pro has a convenient auto-cleaning mode that boosts suction to get rid of tough dirt or spills. It also comes with a battery powered ElectroWall to establish boundaries for the robot.

This budget-friendly choice from a popular upstart brand is the cheapest robot we've tested to date and offers an incredible value for price. Its navigation system is based on a basic random pathing algorithm, and it's not able to map rooms. This renders it less efficient than other models in this list. However it's still able to reach under furniture and in corners, and its mopping mode was very effective during our tests and was able to pick up pet hair and other debris easily.

5. Shark iQ

Shark's iQ may not be as well-built as the Roomba S9, but it does better overall at getting rid of pet hair from all surfaces. It cleans floors that are bare more efficiently and does a decent job on carpets with a low pile and makes use of smart-pathing navigational technology for superior maneuverability. It can be sent to a particular area and has a suite of advanced automation features, including no-go zones and schedules. It lets you pause and resume cleaning sessions which is ideal for homes that have pets.

Its self-cleaning brushroll is able to prevent tangles and can hold up to 30 day's worth of dirt. It has a set of angled side brushes that can reach into corners, as well as a multi-stage filter system to capture dust, allergens, and dander.

The iQ robot vacuum is well-built and feels solid. It works with an app on your smartphone that lets you change the vacuum's settings and schedule cleaning times ahead of time.
