Certain key fobs come with a specific remote engine start button (for example Ford's key fob features a circular arrow going clockwise) which you must press in order to start the car remotely. Other key fobs, like Mazda's requires that you first secure the key, and then press the start button.

You may have a weak or dead battery in your key fob if you aren't able to start your car. This is due to the fact that the batteries inside the key fob are no longer able to send an intense signal to the car's system.
