Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary

Bentley's custom coachbuilding division, Mulliner, has designed a unique keycase to celebrate the brand's centenary. Made of Dark Stained Walnut and Piano Black veneer, it includes a flying 'B' paperweight, a set bently keys and a brochure that features never-before-seen 1930 8 Litre imagery.

Aesthetics

Design

The Bentley Mulsanne key has an opening button for the trunk and a second button that can start the car. The key also has a switch for turning on the parking brake. The key is constructed from vegetable tanned leather and takes more than two days to make each one. The key is cut by hand, shaped, stitched, sealed, and then polished to produce a premium result. It is compact and strong and fits the Bentley key perfectly. Its design is akin to the Volkswagen Phaeton large car's key however, it feels heavier and has a premium feel.

It is also equipped with Secure-A-Key that helps to prevent theft of keys with no key. This device is inserted inside the remote-control key fob and is turned off after a few minutes of inactivity. This prevents thieves from transmitting the frequency of the key to other devices which can unlock and start the vehicle.

Bentley estimates that it takes about 500 man-hours to construct and assemble the Mulsanne. The reluctance to embrace modern technology is the main factor to this time-consuming task.
