How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working

If your key fob doesn't work There are a few simple steps that can fix it. The first step is to make sure that it's not your backup remote.

If your backup remote is unable to lock and unlock the doors of your vehicle, it is likely that the main remote isn't functioning. The majority of car remote key malfunctions are caused by battery or circuitry problems.

Battery

It is not unusual for the battery in a key fob for cars to degrade. It is relatively easy to change out the battery, however it is important to ensure that you select the correct one; you can look in your owner's manual or contact the manufacturer's dealer to determine the type of battery you require. It's also a good idea to inspect the battery compartment carefully because dead batteries can release caustic chemicals that could harm the remote. If changing the batteries doesn't solve the problem, it may be that there are other issues that require attention by a professional. For instance, if the buttons seem stuck or broken, it may be necessary to take the remote apart and rebuild its components. You can also try reprogramming the vehicle to recognize the new device.

Buttons

Key fobs can get filthy and worn out due to repeated use. This is not atypical however, it can cause buttons to cease functioning or require a difficult press to get them to function. This can be very frustrating, especially if you are away from home and need to start your car. Even malfunctioning or worn-out buttons can be fixed with a bit of time and tools you already have at home.

First, check that the batteries are properly charged and that the indentation on the back of the button is filled. Then, carefully open up the remote and examine the circuit board. Examine for signs of rust or other indications that the buttons are worn out or damaged, like missing the conductive paint. Use a Q-tip dipped into alcohol to gently clean any membrane contact that is damaged or has conductive paint missing. Avoid rubbing too hard, because this could damage the conductive painting and prevent the button from firing when it is pressed.

Check the battery connector's terminals for loose solder connections. If this is the case, simply reconnecting them may restore function to the button. The same method can be used to restore function to any other loose connections inside the fob.

If any of the rubber buttons at the front of the keyfob are not functioning or require to be press very hard the graphite disks on the back of the button may have worn out and require replacement. This is usually done by rubbing a pencil on the disks. This should bring the button back to life.

If none of these solutions work, or if you still are unable to get the button to respond when pressed hard, it could be that the circuitry has failed. It is possible to fix this by cleaning and re-soldering the button, but you should have another spare in case it does not work.

Circuitry

The circuit board in the remote control could be dirty, regardless of whether the buttons on the key fob function or not. The issue can be solved through a thorough examination. If you're not confident doing this, head to your local hardware store or the Oreilly's and Vehicle Key Repairs they'll usually have a RFID frequency tester that can tell you whether the key fob is sending signals.

Programming

Key fobs are not indestructible and can be damaged by a variety of factors. A professional auto locksmith, or the main dealer can reprogram the keyfob to get it up and running again. In the rarer case that resetting and repairing your key fob fails, it could be time to replace it completely.
