How to replace window pane Window Panes

A damaged window pane could be a source of frustration. It could also be a chance to upgrade your glass to energy-efficient or insulated windows and reap benefits like more comfort, higher resale value and reduced utility bills.

It's a task you can take on yourself for less than the cost of hiring a professional. It requires the right equipment and an hour or two of your time.

Glass

Replace your old single-paned windows with tempered insulated glass to increase energy efficiency, cut down on noise, and maintain the historical integrity of your old home. The procedure of replacing windows is easy and can be accomplished by anyone with basic hand tools. In addition to a new pane, the following tools are needed such as latex glazing putty; pliers, glazier's points and a heat gun for warming the old putty, if necessary. Before starting, wear gloves and safety goggles as working with broken glass may cause injuries.

Remove any broken glass pieces remaining. It is best to use pliers, but a flathead can be used as well. After that, use a wood chisel or putty knife to remove the rest of the old putty around the frame and sash. Be careful to not break the window sash. Work slowly and carefully. It is best to do this using a sturdy ladder rather than the ground and to place someone on the sash in order to help hold it in place.

Once you have removed all the old putty, prepare the window frame to fit the new pane. To allow for seasonal expansion or contraction and contraction, subtract 1/8 inch from the measurements of width and height. Take these measurements to the nearest hardware store or home center and get a piece of stock glass cut to size. Alternatively, you can cut the glass yourself if you have the tools you need.

After installing the new glass, apply caulking to the edge. This will make the glass weatherproof. Install a glazier's point on both sides of the frame. This will secure the pane. Then, you can press it into the rabbets where the glass will sit. It's important that the glass sits on the putty in all places on both sides So if you have to tap it, gently press the glass into the rabbet with your thumb.

If the new pane has a crack, you can cover it with a solvent-based glass glue or silicone caulk before pressing it into the sash. In other cases, you'll need to apply putty on the crack to create a tight seal and keep water out. Once the putty is dry remove the oily film from the glass and allow it to dry completely before you paint. If you paint before the putty is completely dry, it will not form a solid seal and could leak or discolor in time.

Paint

You may be concerned about replacing a damaged piece of glass. In reality, replacing a single piece of glass doesn't need to be costly when you do it on your own. Even a double-paned window can be replaced for a fraction of the price it would cost for a professional.

If you are working with large glass windows first ensure it is securely fixed to the frame. This task can be made relatively simple and quick with the right tools and techniques.

If you're ready to begin, begin by removing the old window by removing the metal glazing points that are attached to it. These are basically small metal triangles that function as "nails" that hold the window in place within the frame of wood. They are buried under a bead of glazing putty, which hardens into a solid, formed wedge which holds the window in place and hides the edges.

After removing the old pane, clean the frame and wood. Scrape off any paint that has been used and sand the rabbet grooves where the glazing points were.
