Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort that had an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out a few months later, and the group went on a long-distance tour in support of the album. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demos and tapes in search of a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the first album by the band not to include one single track with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which limited his singing ability. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally reforming the band.
