How to Replace an audi smart key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

suzuki-logo.jpgIn this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they perform different functions but the best method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected, audikey but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to an engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and readily available, especially if you're looking at the Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternately, GM's version this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems within your vehicle. It's a vital component of your audi remote key's transmission, since it relays information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is turning. When this sensor fails, it will affect the performance of the transmission, as well as the rest of the replacement car key audi's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these points. This is a standard part that is found across the audi a1 key 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones could be available in wrecking yards.
