These upgrades are able to be used for a number of reasons, including to boost the overall strength of a particular or group unit. They also can affect the overall the gameplay.

The items can be upgraded at any item upgrader NPC in the game. These NPCs can be found in the major questing areas or capital cities. You can also find upgrades for items by visiting dungeons with high-level bosses. You can also talk to NPCs in the garrisons of your faction.

The system of upgrading items in World of Warcraft provides players with the ability to upgrade the level of armor, weapons, and trinkets. This process is largely identical to the process of reforging gear in Mists of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor however, instead of using the currency appropriate to the task players must visit an item upgrader NPC to complete the process.

Certain upgrade components come with cosmetic effects. Upgrade components can be acquired by crafting, buying from vendors or the Trading Post, looting or receiving as a gift. Players can also retrieve upgraded items using an Upgrade extractor, or salvage using a salvage of a higher tier kit. Glyphs that are placed on tools for gathering can be swapped freely.
