Rising star Josh Curran was attempting to source cocaine from a 16-year-old in a nightclub toilet before he knocked out the teenager's front teeth, police will allege.

The New Zealand Warriors forward had been partying at Level Up in Port Macquarie on the mid north coast on the eve of the Parramatta-Penrith grand final.

Curran, who was with two relatives, allegedly approached the 16-year-old and his companion at the popular club formerly known as Altitude on October 2 about 3am.

The 23-year-old footballer asked the teenager where he could buy adsense account cocaine and where he could continue drinking after Level Up closed, police will allege.

Curran and the 16-year-old then went into the club's bathroom to have a further discussion, away from CCTV cameras. 

The 16-year-old allegedly gave Curran his mobile phone so the pair could exchange contact details but the player then put the device in his pocket and the teenager tried to get it back. 

Curran is accused of punching the 16-year-old in the face, knocking out two of his front teeth.

The teenager, who should not have been on the premises due to his age, then fled.

Security arrived and there was allegedly another confrontation with Curran, who was ejected from the William Street premises. 

Officers from the Mid North Coast Police District began an investigation and Curran was arrested on October 21 at Manly.

Curran allegedly approached the 16-year-old and his companion at the club formerly known as Altitude on October 2 about 3am.

He was charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and larceny of the teenager's phone. 

Sydney-born Curran has played second row or lock for the Warriors since 2019, having previously been signed to the Roosters' feeder club North Sydney.

 

He has represented the Indigenous All Stars three times and was picked for the Prime Minister's XIII against Papua New Guinea in September. 

Curran's charges have not triggered the NRL's no-fault stand down policy which sees players suspended if they face a maximum prison term of 11 years or more if convicted.
