The Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 is a Supercapacitor Hybrid

The Sian FKP 37, by Lamborghini's standards is a wild automobile. It's also among the first production hybrids to utilize the supercapacitor.

The Sian is powered by a 34-hp emotor integrated into the automated manual gearbox to 80 mph. After that, the V-12 controls the car. This helps to make the car more efficient and allows it to accelerate instantly.

Forged Composites

The Sian's Hybrid System has another trick up its sleeves which is a supercapacitor. It's capable of recharging more quickly than lithium-ion batteries and the car can run for up to 63 seconds on electric power alone.

Lamborghini’s forged composites will be the main ingredient in this. The material could eventually make its way into production vehicles. It starts out as a sheet of uncured plastic, which is then mixed with short lengths of carbon fiber strands that are randomly placed strands. It's not as appealing as pre-woven sheets of carbon fiber that have been pre-impregnated in resin, but it's lighter and more rigid.

Operators simply cut the carbon fiber to the desired shape, place it in a hot press mould and squeeze it with heat. It takes only a few minutes, when it could take up to hours to make the same thing with traditional methods.

It's not clear whether we'll see structurally forged composite parts in production cars however Lamborghini claims its manufacturing-friendly nature means that the material could eventually find its way into cheaper products. It's certainly expensive enough already however, if the production process can be accelerated, it could save money on both the materials and labor. Forged composite is also more flexible than woven carbon fiber and allows engineers to create complex shapes without adding astronomical costs or weight.

Carbon Skin

The Lamborghini Sian has a futuristic sleek design that is optimized for aerodynamic efficiency. The long, sculpted lines and distinctive aero wings give it a striking profile and its low front and integrated carbon fiber splitter improve stability. The Y-shaped front lights and hexagonal forms that are Lamborghini classics are a great addition to the car's distinctive style. The interior is a combination of luxurious Italian workmanship and state-of-the-art technology. The driver's seat and dashboard are covered in a distinctive material called Carbon Skin, which is customizable through the Ad Personam program.

The Sian's revolutionary hybrid system is powered by a capacitor that combines the power of an electric motor with the power of a 48-volt battery. Its fast-fire torque fills gaps in acceleration, while its regenerative brake recharges the battery. The Sian can travel further on only one gas tank.

The name Sian is a Bolognese word that translates to lightning. It's a tribute to the brand's history and future. The alphanumeric suffix FKP 37 honors Ferdinand Karl Piech, the man who brought Lamborghini into the Volkswagen Group family and died just prior to the Sian's launch. The driver sits behind a steering wheel that is not button-less with enormous paddle shifters, and the infotainment screen has an orientation of vertical.
