They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any tool, weapon, or armor. The button will display the preview of an item's next upgrade level in the event that there are enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the item slot and the current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for example. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to reduce the cost of Flightstones or crests used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

A lot of locations offer upgraders for items in addition to the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and a possibility of obtaining the latest recipe. Utilizing these new currencies isn't too complicated however, the system introduces some changes to the overall upgrade process. Once a piece of gear attains the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it will no longer require Flightstones. This change is intended to allow players to get their gear up to the highest level possible for all their characters rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests wisely, as they have only one purpose. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the top-quality equipment that you can find, and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is especially true for items like trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character which will only be able to take advantage of the account-wide discount when all of the slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
