The GP Unique

It's difficult to find a hotter hatchback than the GP Unique. It's got big intakes, arch extensions and an wing with two parts at the rear; the kind of design features typically reserved for glitzy French unicorns.

Thankfully, the GP Unique doesn't just look mean; it also feels incredibly fast. Its engine is smooth, powerful and its 332lb-ft torque is available with no hassle below 1,750rpm. It's also well-matched with the quick-shifting, six-speed automatic transmission. It's a shame that the GP Unique doesn't have a manual option, but Mini is clear about its focus on lap times, and an auto is definitely the best choice in this case.

There are some flaws. For starters the GP Unique's damping system is firm but uninvolving. When you're driving straight and smooth B road, you can easily work the chassis's dynamic limits however, it's hard to stay fluid with your inputs. The front end gets slightly snatchy and the car struggles when under the pressure of irregular British bumps.

Once you dial in the GP Unique, its handling is exceptional. Its emphatic front end and body control are redolent of the JCW race car we tested last year. It's an absolute pleasure to drive on a slippery road and when in a determined mood.

The car's chassis feels different from that of the standard MT-09 thanks to its increased torsional rigidity as well as larger axles. The new GP's 24.7 degrees of rake, and 108mm of trail feel more pronounced on the nose when as compared to the R6. But it also results in amazing stability when turning.

Another fantastic feature of GP is the PO Generator module. They were clear to see however they did not hinder the viewing experience.

The sound quality is also amazing. The GP500 features an independent DSP chip onboard with treVolo psychoacoustic tuning that creates 3D audio effects. It has an internal quad-speaker layout, that is placed in each corner of the cabinet. This is designed to create an audio field that is awe-inspiring for every person regardless of their position within the room.

There are a variety of connectivity options, including HDMI inputs 1, 2 and 3 and an optical Toslink SPDIF to send Dolby-Atmos native bitstreams to an external sound bar. The GP500 includes two Type-A USB 2.0 ports to stream content, and it also supports a 12-volt trigger for an electric screen.

The GP 900

Sceptics might point out that the GP looks like naked XSR900 in a Wayne Rainey frock. The 117bhp CP3 motor is extremely usable, with a broad spread of power available from very low revs. Even at road speeds the GP's midrange power is enough to recalculate your speed/time/distance calculations and completely dissect Google Maps estimated time of arrival. The GP's chassis has the appropriate amount of stiffness, but it's not as stiff as a R6 or as light and agile like the TT500. It's still a lot of fun and a blast to ride.
