Payday loan firms back off over advertising code fears

Several payday loans firms have been forced to change the way they do business after a Financial Mail investigation found they might be in breach of advertising codes.

They were promoting expensive, almost-instant short-term loans available on the web to fund High Street shopping sprees and even cosmetic surgery.

Payday loans are more usually linked to emergencies, such as paying bills, but some campaigners warn against their use altogether.

Ukpaydayloans.net and nadineloans.co.uk have withdrawn images of young women laden with carrier bags after a report in last week's Financial Mail.

The Money Shop, owned by American multinational payday lender Dollar Financial, said it had decided to sever links with nadineloans.co. The Money Shop had had a complaint upheld against it by the Advertising Standards Authority because one of its advertisements ‘trivialised the decision to take out a loan'.
