Upgrading equipment grants a bonus to the item's base stats. The bonus is according to the rarity and quality of the upgrade component.

Components

Upgrade components are the parts that can make your weapons and armor better. They can be obtained by fighting off enemies, locating them in spheres of items or buying them from karma dealers. Contrary to other products, upgrade components are not destroyed when removed from an item.

The main function of upgrade components is to allow an item to be upgraded, but they also serve other purposes. They can be used to increase the level of an item that can be upgraded or they can be used to boost the experience gained when upgrading an existing weapon or piece of gear. They can be forged for additional bonuses. For instance, a specially crafted glyph will boost the chances of upgrading its target, while a boost upgrade will enhance the defense or attack attribute of a weapon or armor.

Selecting an upgrade template from the GUI will allow you to bind it to an item. This will show an upgrade component list that the item can be upgraded to. You can also use the workbench to selecting an upgrade template. In either instance, the item will be upgraded when enough upgrade components are collected.

Each component has its own experience multiplier, which determines how much more experience an item receives when it is upgraded with that component. For instance, organic components have a an experience multiplier that is higher than mechanical ones. Therefore, it is recommended to upgrade with organic components until you have reached the experience multiplier of the next rank of weapon or gear, then change to mechanical upgrades.

Each item has an upgrade Item maximum number that can be received. The number of upgrades are determined by the upgradeable rank and the type of upgrade for the upgradeable item. The most powerful upgrade is a weapon with the tier 10. The most commonly used upgrade is a gun with tier 6 and an armor upgrade of tier 5.

Sets

A set is a collection of objects that share the same bonus. Each item can be upgraded at minimum once. The upgrade increases the guaranteed bonuses. The first time you upgrade an item, its initial stat will be +1. In subsequent upgrades the stats of the primary one will be boosted a bit more (for example, +1 up to 12+/13+/14+) Every time you upgrade the item, one of its extra stats is increased randomly.
