Lolita's Personality

Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are smart and affectionate. These birds are ideally suited to families with a variety of members. They can become bored quickly and discover ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't involved enough with them. If they are not socialized properly macaws can become aggressive and may even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw does not feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds who love to play, climb and play. They must spend at least two to three hours a day outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They enjoy playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They love going to playgrounds and parks as well as local restaurants and bars. They are not only an excellent pet, but is also a great pet for children.

Despite their adoring nature they are loud and can be a nuisance for those living near. They can be heard making high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be disruptive in condominiums and apartments, or in close proximity to children who may be frightened by their roar.

The species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. For this reason, DNA testing is the only method to determine the sex. Once sex is known pairing of the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. It is a lengthy process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and understand that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help to correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's care

For a long time, activists have been pleading for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita might suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to sea.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and harming her immune system. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, promised to come up with a plan with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a facility on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the remainder of her life receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and bond with their families until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita blue & gold macaw's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Like any animal species in captivity, a captive gold and blue macaw's well-being is dependent on a balanced diet. Lolita's Health

The move comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean and even meet the orca believed to be her mother. These plans were too late to save the whale, which died on Friday as a result of what was believed to be a kidney problem.
