How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged or cracked window is an issue. This could be an opportunity to upgrade to energy-efficient windows or insulated ones to enjoy benefits such as improved comfort, higher resale value and reduced utility bills.

This is a project you could do yourself for a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional. It requires the right tools and only an hour or two of your time.

Glass

The replacement of a window pane is relatively easy and can be accomplished by homeowners with basic hand tools. Glazier's Points

Write down the exact dimensions of the frame. Bring these measurements to an hardware store or home center and request that the new pane cut smaller than the frame's opening. This will ensure a secure fit, and allow for expansion and contraction.

Place the new pane into the frame and press it down with your hands. Use the point of the chisel, or the back of the putty blade to smudge the glazier's points as shown in Figure 11. Apply a thin layer glazing compound on the rabbet grooves and the edges of the glass. This will protect and seal the edges. Allow it to dry completely and cure.

Once the glazing compound has dried and the glazing compound is dry, you can install the new window sash. The first step is to coat the wood with a thick layer of linseed. This will stop the new putty from drying out or cracking when it absorbs moisture. Putty

If you plan to reinstall the original sash, remove the molding pieces that secure the old pane. Then, sand the sash to make sure it's flat and ready for a new caulk. Remove the glazing points from the rabbets, or the grooves in the sash where the glass is. If they're hard to chisel, hold the hand tool, such as a heating gun over them to allow them to soften before. When using a heated tool, be sure to avoid damaging the sash or its railings.

Prepare a bed for your new pane by removing the old glaze and putty. Roll a rope of glazing compound between your hands, shaping it to be around 1/2-inch thick. Then, press it into the rabbets, where the glass will rest. It's important that the glass rests against the putty on each side If you have to, lightly tap the glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane is cracked then you can seal it with a solvent-based glass glue or silicone caulk prior pressing it into the sash. Otherwise, you'll need to apply putty over the crack to create an impervious seal to keep water out. Once the putty is dry, wipe the oily film off the glass and let it dry completely before painting. If you paint before the putty is completely dry, it won't create a solid seal and could be leaking or discoloring in time.

Paint

If you've had a broken window pane, you might be concerned about the expense of a new one. The truth is, replacing a single piece of glass doesn't need to be expensive even if you do it your own.
