There is a current national shortage of medication to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing issues and an increased global demand.

Titration

A highly experienced psychiatrist consultant will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your ADHD. This includes a thorough medical history, and an evaluation using the standard ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.

After your examination You will be advised that medication may be beneficial for your specific situation. This will be discussed during your follow-up appointment (which can be done in person via video link or by telephone). This is a process which may take several weeks. It involves adjusting the dosage of your child's medication gradually until the proper balance is reached. It is not unusual to need to titrate two or three medicines before determining the most effective one for your child's ADHD symptoms. It is crucial that parents take part in the titration process and be aware of their child's behavior so that they can inform the doctor whether the medication is working or causing adverse reactions.

Unless you have decided to return to NHS treatment and have decided to return to NHS care, your medication will be issued with a prescription from a private pharmacy that you will need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in the consultation fee). You'll need to attend six-monthly appointments to check your medication. This includes blood pressure and pulse measurements. Annual reviews are also required.

Follow-up appointments

After the assessment is complete and you are satisfied, you can schedule follow-up appointments with your psychiatrist. The appointment is usually done through a zoom video call. However, in certain circumstances, it might be possible to have an audio-only consultation to be conducted (again at an additional cost).

We suggest that if you are unsure of your preferences, you speak to your GP prior to booking your private appointment. Some providers have different policies on whether they require the submission of a GP letter. Find out if your GP accepts the Shared Care Agreement, which means you will be referred to them after you leave the clinic to get a prescription medication.

Medication
