Bedside cots (also called co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to let parents sleep close to their baby at night without the risk of SIDS. They are only recommended for up to 6 months old, at which point your baby will be ready to be moved to an actual cot.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. They can also be converted into toddler beds, while cot beds are generally only used for up to three years. old. Height

When choosing a bedside cot be sure to choose one that can be raised up to a height that is comfortable for feeding your babies. It should also be able to be dropped down so that you can pull your baby up towards you for feedings at night or for soothing. This feature is especially useful if you are recovering from a C-section. The Next2me Cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to the maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm, and the Knuma Hutch can be adjusted to 70cm.

Another thing to consider is how low you want the cot's base to be. While some moms find it easier to get their babies out of the standard Moses baskets when they are at the lowest height, others prefer a higher base to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular option and one of our mom testers stating that it comes with a simple collapsible side that is easy to push down with the click of the button.

Remember that a bassinet/bedside crib vs cot sleeping device should only be used when your baby is able to hold his head without assistance, which is usually around 6 months. This is due to the possibility of suffocation. It's also important to know that if you opt for a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can be converted into a crib, you will need to begin removing the sides once your child is able to do this, so that they don't climb out or get out of bed.

Design

There are many different styles of bedside crib, ranging from simple to extravagant. The more expensive options could include features such as a built-in night light, a soothing centre that plays music and sounds and offers two levels of vibrations to help soothe your baby to sleep, or even an adjustable base that makes it easier to reach your child for feedings. Some models can be transformed into an infant bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready for their own bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, for example has won Bronze at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot Moses Basket or Crib category. It has a swivelling bottom that lets you pick up your baby and transfer them to the other side of the crib without having to get out of bed. This is great for new mothers recovering from Caesarean sections or those who have to remain in bed for prolonged periods of time. Jasmine, a MFM mum who tested this product at home, stated that it was simple to use and made it easier to reach her baby - especially after having a c-section.

Another option is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the category of Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It is equipped with a machine-washable liner, reflux incline and rocking feature. It's bigger than other cribs we tested, but it folds down into its travel bag to make it compact when not in use.

MFM mom home test Leya also appreciated the function of this bedside crib explaining how it was designed with parents and babies in mind. It is easy to move and super-sturdy. She also said that the swivelling bassinet base was a great idea because it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to facilitate access for moms who are recovering from c-sections.

Safety

The bedside cot's primary safety characteristic is the fact that it is able to be moved up or down so that parents can reach their baby to feed or comfort them, or change his or her nappy. This makes it ideal for new mothers who may still recovering from a C section. Choose a model that lets you lower one side at the press of a button so you can easily lift your baby without having to get out of bed. This is particularly important as your baby gets older and more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation such as pillowcases and duvets that can cause your baby to overheat.

The NPR released by the CPSC NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product, such as gaps between the bedside crib or cot sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents) and consumer misassembly or missing components (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of adding additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example they would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements were not feasible or effective in reducing the number of incidents where infants are trapped between the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.

A majority of the incidents reported in the NPR included bedside sleepers with multiple uses that can be converted to other types of use, such as bassinets and play yards. Several commenters suggested the CPSC include a different provision to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers that are multi-use that would allow them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that can be removed. The attachment can be permanently attached or removed when the product is not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is currently reviewing these comments as well as other submissions received in response to the NPR on sleep at night. The Commission will take into account these comments when deciding on the final rule that is expected to be released in November 2021.
