The X1 Omni's biggest draw is its enormous dock that doubles as a charging base and the housing for two water tanks, a cleaning sink, and an automatic 2.5-liter dust bin that is automatically empties.

The base comes with several control buttons that let you manually start a cleaning task or recall the robot, or run the dock’s auto-emptying procedure. Hold down two of the buttons to toggle a child lock that is a great feature for parents who are worried about their children playing with the vacuum.

Like other robotic vacuums the X1 Omni utilizes its camera to detect furniture and obstacles in its path, and then avoid them. True Mapping 2.0 navigation maps your home up to four times faster than laser detection systems.

Unfortunately, this means that the X1 Omni can sometimes get so entangled with an obstruction, such as the power cord that is draped across a rug that it becomes stuck and stops working until you free it. This was a rare occurrence, but frustrating nonetheless, since the X1 does not have an "stuck status" alert on its app.

The X1 Omni is unable to automatically switch from mopping mode to vacuuming mode during a cleaning session. You will have to manually switch between the two modes, which isn't that bad, except that the mopping pad isn't washed or dried between uses. This could lead to mildew and mold.

On the positive side the X1 Omni is a beautiful-looking robot thanks to the design team at Jacob Jensen (of Bang & Olufsen fame) who dreamed up its sleek, modern-looking base and mopping pad apparatus. It's a huge difference from the utilitarian black bases of rivals such as Roborock or iRobot. And it's a welcome sight for the market that is dominated by boxy models.
