UPVC Window Repairs

Cracks

If your upper or lower sash is difficult to raise it's most likely due to the fact that the cords on the sash's weights have been damaged. This is a simple fix that can be done with a ladder and flathead screwdriver. Replacing a rotted drip cap is a different repair that can be done at home. Rot-free drip caps are available at most home centers and can be nailed and caulked into place with ease. Also, if you have a double or triple-pane window, be sure to check that one of the panes are not broken. The reason is that the gases that are trapped between the windows are responsible for increasing the efficiency of the window and must not escape.

Water Leaks

Next, measure the spindle protruding from the underside of your handle. You can request a replacement or bring it to a local hardware store for a replacement. Then, pull out the setscrew on the shaft of the operator and smooth it so that the set screw is able to be secured to the shaft (photo). Then, your uPVC windows should shut smoothly.

Broken Hinges

If your uPVC window hinges have broken or aren't working properly and you are unable to open or close the window, it will be difficult to open or close the window. This could be a security problem and also prevent your home from staying warm or cold. You can easily purchase a new hinge for your uPVC window. However, it's important to ensure you have the correct hinge for your windows.

This is because the hinges must be the same width to fit in the window frame. The most commonly used hinge used in uPVC windows is a standard 15mm or 18mm UPVC window hinge. However, there are specialised kinds of window hinges that are suitable for different types of frames, such as wooden frames. You can test this by using a screwdriver to locate the friction screw that is at the end of the hinge and then loosen it. Locks that aren't working

Modern uPVC windows are equipped with espagnolette locks. They work by pushing the nose end of the handle onto the wedge block, then turning it to close the lock. They are very efficient in keeping windows secure, but over time, they could begin to fail if not properly maintained. We recommend lubricating with WD-40 a couple of times per year.

If you notice that your uPVC windows don't open and shut as easily as they used too, or If the lock isn't functioning properly, it's likely that there is a problem with the gearbox that locks the window frame. It can be difficult to access this as it requires the removing of the seals that surround the frame and removing the handle (be cautious not to damage the seals).
