Lolita's Care

For decades activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to the ocean.

Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita Blue & gold Macaw a relative of theirs, vowed to develop plans with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary in Washington's west coast, where she could live for the rest of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. She has been fighting persistent illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile condition.

The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current state of health. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. They have shown that she is ageing quickly and her health is deteriorating.

Since her captor does not need to reveal the information, it's unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the deaths of captive orcas.

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita Many people believe that she could be closer than ever before to living a wild life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to move the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she could swim deep in the ocean, and possibly even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. The plans were not enough to save the beloved whale that died on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
