Making the window come apart starts by removing any security fittings in front of the lower sash. Then, remove the staff bead. Finally, pull out the bottom sash. Remove the cords and chains from both sides, and tie them so that they cannot be pulled back by the attached weights. It's time to take off the upper sash. Remove the sash stops (a thin vertical strip of wood that is used to hold the sash) and remove any painted-covered hardware. The sash can be pulled back to reveal the balancing weight, that is a massive lead or iron cylinder enclosed in a concealed cavity and secured by a rope. To prevent the sash from falling into the void pierce it with an hammer and then sacrifice the weight.

When the sashes are untied Clean the jamb and meet rails, remove the glazing cords and sash bars, and strip any paint off the sash stops using an utility knife. Once the sashes are back in place, reattach the stops using nails that are small enough to avoid puncturing the balancing weight.
