Most utility items give players an advantage in navigation or enhance the ability to fight. Sharpening stones, crafted by an Weaponsmith can boost power and Ferocity, while Maintenance Oils, created by an Huntsman will increase concentration and healing power. Other items of utility, such as Writs and Theses crafted by the Scribe can be used to give the player either an increase in Damage or Condition Damage.

All XCOM soldiers can equip a useful item at the beginning of the campaign, and an additional slot can be obtained by acquiring certain types of armor or by completing engineering, research or experimental projects in the Proving Ground.
