Replacement Upvc Window Handles

Almost all replacement upvc window handles include everything you require to complete the task. However, if the old handle had pins or screws holding it, these will need to be removed. Remove the'snap-in' cover at the base of the handle.

You will then need to determine the type of window lock and handle you are replacing. This is important!

Espag

Espag handles are a multipoint lock system that can be used to secure casement windows such as uPVC and wooden double glazing. The handle is fitted with a 7mm square shaft that fits inside a gearbox on the uPVC window. When the handle is turned, it activates a series locks around the window's perimeter. Espag handles, also referred to as shootbolts, offer more security than the single point lock found on older frames.

If you're planning to replace your current uPVC window handle with an espag handle, you will have to determine the size of the spindle that is installed and measure it from the base of the handle to ensure you get the right replacement. This measurement is known as step height and will assist you in finding the ideal uPVC handle for your home.

It is possible to remove any screws which protect the screws that hold the handle in place, and if this is the case, you can use the screwdriver or pliers to remove the pins that hold the handle. After this is done then you need to disassemble the handle by taking off the screws or pins that hold the spindle before taking it away from the window.

Once the handle is removed, you will then be able to access the locking mechanism inside the frame of the window and take out the wedge block for cockspur which is placed next to the handle, allowing the window to open. The new uPVC handles you purchased should be able to slide over the cockspur block and then into the handle spindle to allow the window to open again. If you want to make sure that your uPVC handles are securely secured you should replace the cockspur block with a brand new one.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles are generally found on older uPVC and aluminium windows. The handle rotates and closes over a plastic wedge shaped receiver catch (not to be confused with window latches made from timber which are also handled in this section). They can be locked or nonlockable. They are available in various nose sizes that can be adapted to the frame.

The handle is locked by a small triangle-shaped spur (spur) which is fixed to the frame. They are usually one-way handles, however a locking deadlock cylinder can be fitted for additional security.

The replacement cockspur handles are also easy to put in. All you need is the correct backset and a brand new set (supplied). The backset is measured from the baseplate to the underside nose of the handle. In general Aluminium window frames tend to have a 9mm backset, while UPVC utilizes a 21mm. There are many other variations however, so it is crucial to take a measurement before buying the handle (see video below for how).

This type of window handle can be replaced by unscrewing the current handle and removing the spindle, or in some cases, the entire handle. The replacement handle is then screwed in place with a pair of pozidrivs screws. The pozidriv screw can be purchased in a brass or zinc finish to match the hardware you already have. There is also an option of a self-locking pozidriv screw.

Turn and tilt

When tilt and turn windows are closed, they are locked like any other fixed window. By turning the handle either 90@ or 180@, based on the tilt-and-turn type of window the sash opens to the outside and the window will tilt inwards to allow for air exchange. This is a great way to ventilate without having to open an enormous potentially dangerous window.

The sash can be opened fully by turning the handle 90° or replacement upvc window handles 180°@. This allows for complete air exchange which is especially useful for rooms that are smoky or where smells or smoke can build up. This allows you to easily clean the outside of the glass since you can do it from inside your home. This is a task that often requires a lot of risk.

Tilt and turn windows are also very secure. They are very difficult to open when they are locked in the closed position. They also have double seals which keep rainwater out of your home while it is in the tilted position or swing. This can be a particularly beneficial feature for older homes, where burglars are more likely to target traditional windows that are opened via the side hinges.

Spade

There are a variety of handles that can be installed on double-glazed windows made of upvc. The two main types are Espag handles and Cockspur handles.
