Smart Keys Keys

If you have a Toyota equipped with smart key technology you might be able to open the doors and start the engine without taking your keys out of your pocket or purse. Smart keys allow you to save settings for different drivers and also unlock windows and sunroofs via remote. They may also include a feature that allows you to set speed restrictions for your teenager when they are driving.

You must be within 10 feet of the vehicle to use the smart key. When you're within the required distance the vehicle will turn on courtesy lights and automatically open the passenger or driver's door. The trunk can be locked by pressing the button on the key fob. Many modern smart keys come with a telescoping blade to accommodate your different hand sizes and offer greater range of access to the lock and ignition buttons.

The smart key fob functions as a transponder chip, just like traditional car keys. It sends an encrypted signal to the car when you use the locks and unlock buttons. It's designed to deter thieves from hot-wiring or taking your vehicle by removing the engine immobilizer. However, there are some limitations to this technology. A skilled thief can use a scanning device to locate the code and transmit it to the key fob.

A newer smart key such as the Mercedes Benz SmartKey uses a unique technique known as rolling code. A computer in the vehicle scans the unique code each time you insert the key. This is to ensure that no one else can gain use of the vehicle since it is nearly impossible for a scanner to record and transmit the same rolling code repeatedly.

If your smart key isn't responding to lock or unlock buttons, it might have a dead battery. The circuit board can be removed from most fobs to replace the battery. Take a photo of the battery that was used and note down where the new battery will be placed inside the case. This will allow you to put it together correctly. Reinstall the key fob case. If you're careful you shouldn't need to force it into position. If it isn't snapping into position, gently press on the edges of the frame to break it. Attach the key to the metal frame and switch it on to test the fob. After reassembling everything the key fob should be like new.
