1. iRobot S8

This smart robot vacuum and mop combination is an excellent choice for many homes. It is able to vacuum and mop well and has a great navigation system that includes both GPS and laser sensors, robot and has a wide range of controls and features accessible via the app. It also has a handy feature that allows you to add cleaning zones to certain areas that require extra attention, and also to keep Out zones that you don't want it to move. It is rarely derailed or stuck during a cleaning cycle. In my tests, it was the best robot vacuum cleaner at avoiding objects like power cables. It's not as reliable in detecting pet waste, or other hazards.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

While the Anker-owned Eufy has earned an impact in budget robot vacuums, it's never offered an all-in-one model that could also mop. The X8 Hybrid is a new model that offers a range of features that are advanced and is able to compete with more expensive models.

The laser navigation is the main selling point of this machine. Previous Eufy devices have created a rough map of your home by using infrared sensors and bumping into things however the X8's laser mapping system is far more precise. It also takes a lot less time to create an accurate picture of your home and can store multiple maps, which is ideal for multi-floor homes.

The X8 is still a decent vacuum on bare floors that can carry debris under its side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin with relative ease. The X8's tyres, despite having a circular shape, are very efficient in grabbing corners and edges. Our tests revealed that it was able to remove 90 percent of the fur from hard floors.

The basic mopping mode uses the same reservoir of water as the vacuuming mode. While this is great for spills that aren't too big however, you aren't able to control how much water it uses which can limit its effectiveness when dealing with more serious staining. It does, however, do an admirable job of removing pet hair, with a higher pickup rate than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is renowned for its quiet, efficient appliances. It has a beautiful design, a great navigation system and a powerful cleaning power. It has some oddities in its operation, which prevent it from being ranked as the top smart robot vacuum.

Like the latest models from iRobot and models, the RX2 comes with a dual-sensor mapping system that utilizes an LIDAR sensor to map the space and two 3D scanning cameras to identify and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real time. Once mapped the app allows you to create virtual no-go zones as well as preferred areas that the robot will clean automatically. You can also alter the cleaning modes, initiate a manual clean or watch live feeds of the cameras onboard from the main screen.

The RX2 is equipped with excellent sensors that can detect furniture and other obstructions instantly. The suction and sweeping power are top-of-the-line cleaning up surface debris from carpets with medium piles and dust on floors that are unfinished. It's not the fastest robotics on the market. It's not the most efficient climber and has issues with transition strips made of metal.

4. Shark ION

This budget-friendly robovac looks just like a typical robot, but it's an upgrade in performance and features. Its intelligent mapping system creates 2D and 3D maps of your home and uses those to navigate around obstacles and avoid them. It can even detect common obstacles such as furniture legs and power cords in real-time. This combination of sensors along with a bump sensor and an infrared sensor for dropping that keeps it from falling down steps, makes it one of the most flexible vacuums we've tried.

In our tests, it was able to moved over large shag rug and didn't end up stuck on them (like the RoboVac 11s or Roomba 690). Its navigation abilities were also impressive; its composite score in carpet and bare floors beat out the competition and it picked up 98.5 percent of surface pet hair and litter from our lab test samples.

The controls are less basic than the competition's. There is a cleaning button at the top and you can choose to start it with the app or by voice commands using Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also create a schedule for weekly or daily cleaning, set no-go zones, and view its cleaning history. Covered in stylish dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and looks attractive in your home. The dust bin on the rear is easily accessible to empty, and the removal of the filters is also simple.

5. Eufy 11S

If you're looking to buy a basic robotic vacuum that is simple and has no frills at a reasonable cost, the Eufy 11S is a great option. It's a capable robot vacuum, even if the app isn't the most responsive and the 980 spins out when it comes across cables.

We really like the 980, because it makes use of its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors and visual simultaneity mapping and localisation (or vSLAM) to store your home's floor plan.
