Saab Key Programming

Saab cars manufactured since 1994 use an immobilizer system that is based on keys that are coded. In order to add a second key, it requires a new transponder and special programming. This is usually done by the dealer using a Tech2 diagnostic tool.

The issue is that it can be very costly. It is always advisable to keep a spare set of keys at hand.

Transponder key

The transponder is a key that is equipped with an electronic chip. This chip sends out a signal when the key is inserted in the ignition. The car then checks to see whether the signal is the same as the one on the key. If the signals are in sync it will open and start. This is a great method to protect your car from theft.

Transponder keys are a popular addition to cars, but they are not as safe as traditional keys made of metal. While the metal portion of a traditional key can be cut and copied however, a transponder is secured by an electronic chip. The chip has a unique code that is inserted into a car's computers in order to identify it.

When a Saab key fob is used the car recognizes it and allows it to turn on. However, it is only able to do this if your key fob is equipped with a chip that is not modified that has been programmed to match it. Otherwise, the car will reject the key and not start.

Saab cars are usually delivered with two keys. If you have only one, you should get an additional key as soon as you can. This is because, if it's lost and the car is damaged, it will require an entirely new CIM and the locking cylinders replaced. This could be expensive especially if buying a used car.

The next step is connecting the row and columns wires to your microcontroller. This is the most challenging part of the project and will require a good deal of soldering. It's not a common way to go about it, but you should determine how to route and connect each column and row. For this keyboard, there are five rows and replace 17 columns, which means there will be 22 microcontroller pins and wires to connect.

After the columns and rows are soldered, it's the time to connect them to key switches. Solder a diode on each key switch pin. This will protect the pins from current, and prevent them from being cut off. A diode lets current only flow in only one direction. The tools plug into the OBD port and guide the user through the procedure, making it simpler than replacing the computer inside the vehicle.

Jump-starting the battery

Most people keep a set of jumper cables in their trunks to use in an emergency, but jumping a battery on newer automobiles might not be the best idea. These vehicles are equipped with many computers and digital devices which communicate with each other. A surge in voltage when batteries are connected to another could cause damage to the components making your car inoperable.

Connect the cables to the vehicle operating. Allow it to run for two minutes. Attach the red clip on the positive terminal of the battery that's good. (It will read "POS" or "+".) Attach the other end to a clean, unpainted metal surface underneath the hood of the disabled car. The engine block is a good option. The black cable is not to be connected to the negative terminal of the dead battery. This could result in sparks, which could ignite the gasoline in the engine compartment.
