Up until recently the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credence. The silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to remove information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. But this is merely one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the changes in the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their environments which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. Over time these changes could result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It describes how individuals with advantageous traits survive and reproduce more than those with less advantageous traits. In time, this disparity in reproduction can lead to the emergence of completely new species.

The term "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has evolved, both in science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to evolve into a different species. The term transmutation was coined by the Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that species are evolving into different species in a gradual and predictable manner.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process in which living things develop characteristics to improve their chances of survival or conceiving offspring. Over time the genetic variability could result in the development of entirely new physical or biological traits in a population. The variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, can't be considered evolution because they aren't passed on to the next generation.

Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial in spite of the fact that it has been proven accurate by thousands of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. They argue that the concept should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their campaign to exclude evolution from high-school textbooks, including the removal of any mention of the evolutionary origins of humans as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur thought to be the ancestor of birds.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution explains the origins and evolution of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the pillars of biology, and helps scientists discover how living things operate and grow. Evolution also shows how various species are interconnected. Scientists study evolution in order to better comprehend nature and make valuable discoveries like new drugs.

The evidence for biological evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains more about the universe and life on this planet. It has been rigorously studied and verified for many years. Many people, including some religious leaders, support the scientific theory of evolution. It is crucial to keep in mind that evolutionary biology does not contradict religious beliefs because it only focuses on physical objects, events, and processes.

In fact many religious people have come up with ways to reconcile their beliefs with the theory of evolution. For example certain Christians believe that God created the world through evolution and that humans share an ancestral lineage with other animals.

It is important that science educators advocate for teaching evolution. In some countries, the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States some states have taken measures to restrict teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the removal of textbook content about the evolution of horses and the avian ancestral Archaeopteryx.

Although these are alarming developments, it is important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.

The vast majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution. The reason for this is various reasons. What is Creationism?

In the end the evolutionary changes result in new species identical to the original species.

Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, referred to as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and then slowly evolved. In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Some scientists and educational institutions are however more flexible and allow creationism and evolution to be included in their curriculum.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this drive. STR has secured its first victory by eliminating examples of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx in textbooks. The focus is now on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution as well.

STR claims that it has the backing of 4,000 families and members. Its mission is to cut out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The KACR has accomplished a lot through its seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. On August 6 and 7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science in major seminaries, too. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
