How to Replace an audi keyless go G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions however the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this component, look for s.lui.au signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. To accomplish this, www.jtayl.me it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially when they're a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car.
