South Korea's democracy is susceptible to populist impulses. Nonetheless, it is healthier than one would expect.

Origins

The new kingdom grew its territory to the southwest of the peninsula, and was at war with Goguryeo and China's commanderies in the area. Baekje included elements of Confucian thinking into its state beliefs and made the male-centric concept of filiopiety an official doctrine in 1390 CE. Under the cover of filiopiety fathers were accountable to their families. They were expected to be obeyed by all and respected by their children and grandchildren.

Goryeo, a nation which ruled from 918 until 1392 CE, gave the world the Hangul Alphabet, based on the shapes that were created by the mouth while pronouncing. This greatly improved communication and led to a boom in the writing of Buddhist text. Woodblock printing and movable type were also refined. It was during this period that the Samguk sagi, also known as 'History of the Three Kingdoms' first appeared in 1145 CE.

The evolution of Korea

The Korean peninsula has been habitable since Neolithic times. The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to collaborate in order to expand their territorial holdings. In the final, Silla, with significant Chinese assistance, defeated the other states and unified the peninsula in 935 CE.

In the past, most of the anti-evolutionist movement in Korea was focused on teaching college students and bringing them to Christ. A significant increase in interest in creation science began in 1980, with an all-day seminar that was held during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul that featured Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the main speakers. This event drew a large audience of scientists, professors, and church leaders.

The success of the event led to the creation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31, 1980. The event was widely covered in the national press, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR started publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the organization reported on its own activities and published articles about scientific evidence supporting creationism.
