World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading

Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric stats on weapons, armor and rings. They also boost extra bonuses such as damage from PvE and crit chance.

If the template for upgrading a weapon ends in %, it will gain 3percent of its previous attack damage every time it's upgraded.

Item upgrading costs crests and the item upgrade's current level. The cost rises with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into weapons, armor and trinkets in order to give them a boost in stats or add a bonus effect. These can be obtained through crafting, purchasing from vendors trading, or looting. Certain upgrades have unique cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components are only available to equipment with a slot. The item must be upgraded to blue before the component can be used. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used once; they can't be used multiple times or replaced with new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a special type of upgrade component used for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment and some of the items that are not ascending back. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging gear from the ascended, or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade may include a suffix or prefix changing the name of the equipment to which it is used (for instancefor example "Canthan Armor Insignia is changed to Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players create stronger versions of the equipment with the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than is required to reach the same level of upgrade through normal methods.

A boost upgrade can modify the attack or defense characteristics of a weapon or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated Crazed Mechanist, these upgrades can be made at the Portative Forging Station. They can also be dropped by enemies when upgrading other gear or by buying them from the cash store for 500 upgrade crystals per.

The player can have up to five boost upgrades at a time; each upgrade increases the chance that a better-quality version of the item will be available at the time of the next reset. This gives players an incentive to upgrade their gear even when they're not sure how much it will be improved after a reset.

The process of upgrading an item can be costly and it is likely that the item will eventually become obsolete, or even break, when the upgrade is unsuccessful.
