Replacement Upvc Window Handles

Almost all replacement upvc window handles come with everything you need but if the original handle had pins or screws that held it in place, they will need to be removed. Then, remove the'snap-in' cover on the base of the handle.

Espag

Espag handles are a multipoint lock system that is fitted to casement windows, such as uPVC and wooden double glazing. They have seven millimetre square spindles that is fitted into the gearbox of a uPVC window and when the handle is turned, it operates a series of locks around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles, also referred to as shootbolts, offer more security than the single point lock that is found on older window frames.

They are available in a range of different options such as inline and cranked designs that can be used for either left or right hand operation. There are also ergonomic handles that improve the look and feel of your window as well as handles.

You will need to measure the size of the spindle from the base of your uPVC handle if you want to order the correct replacement. This measurement, known as the step height, will help you choose the ideal uPVC window handle for your home.

You may need to remove any screw covers that are protecting the screws that hold the handle in place, and if that's the case, use the screwdriver or pliers to remove the pins that hold the handle. Once you have done this, you will need to remove the handle from the frame by taking off the screws or pins that secure the spindle and then pulling it away from the window.

Once the handle is removed, you will then be in a position to access the locking mechanism within the frame of the window and remove the wedge block cockspur that is attached to the handle to allow the window to open. The replacement uPVC window handles you have ordered should now be able to fit onto the wedge block of the cockspur and then into the spindle of the handle and allow the window to open again. It is recommended to replace the cockspur wedge block an entirely new one when you change your uPVC handle to ensure that it is properly secured.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles are typically found on older uPVC and aluminium windows. The handle is closed and then turns into a wedge-shaped plastic catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches which are also covered in this section.) These handles are available in lockable and nonlockable models. They are available in various nose heights that can be adapted to the frame.

The handle locks with the small spur (little triangle bit) pulling up against a wedge made of plastic that is fixed to the frame. They are typically one-way handles, however a deadlock with a locking mechanism can be fitted to provide additional security.

As with Espag handles cockspur handle replacements are simple to install All you require is new screws (supplied) and the proper backset. The backset is measured from the baseplate to the underside of the nose of the handle. Aluminium window frames are generally 9mm wide, while UPVC is 21mm wide. There are a myriad of variations though so it is important to measure the handle prior to buying the handle (see video below for how).

This kind of window handle can be replaced by unscrewing the current handle and taking off the spindle, or in certain cases, the entire handle. The new handle is fixed by using a pair of pozidrivs screws. The pozidriv screws can be purchased in either a brass or zinc finish to match the hardware, and there is the option of a self-locking version.

Turn and tilt

The top European window style of tilt and turn has been around in Europe for a long time, however it is only now starting to take off in the American market. They combine the advantages of three window styles into one: tilt, pivot and in-swing. They are ideal for older homes because they offer more airflow than standard windows.

When tilt and turn windows are closed, they lock like any other fixed window. Spade

There are several different types of handles that can be put in on windows with double-glazed upvc. The two most popular types are Espag handles and Cockspur handles. There are also tilt and turn handles blade or spade handles, and monkey tail handles. The type of handle you pick will be based on your preferences and the kind of windows you have.

In order to choose the right replacement upvc window handle, you have to know how your current handle is fixed to the frame. This is referred to as handing and is a crucial aspect to consider when purchasing online. Some handle designs are not suitable for all windows.
