The rich history of Bristol has influenced the city's architecture and heritage. Many buildings that date to the 18th century are still in use. There are a variety of architectural styles in the city, from medieval to 20th-century brutalism and beyond. One of these styles, the Bristol Byzantine style is made out of polychrome brickwork and arches with ornamental designs.

There are many historical buildings in the city that have survived, including St Nicholas's Almshouses, the Royal Fort and the Hippodrome.
