It has a 220 degree Lidar which, when combined with the 3D Matrix Camera System, provides one of my top navigation and object avoidance capabilities I've seen in the form of a robotic vacuum. It packs a powerful 4600mAh battery which lasts up to 170-minutes when mopping and suction are set to standard mode (it can run longer in turbo). It will even return to its dock to replenish its battery in mid-clean.

It's efficient and does an outstanding job of cleaning my two-bedroom apartment. It vacuums carpeted areas extremely quickly, and the hardwood floors in the living room, and hallways in a single pass. Its 8,000pa suction motor will quickly pick up sand, dirt, and pet hair. Carpet detection increases power automatically when it encounters rugs and the two side brushes help draw out dirt from corners.

The mopping performance is a little less impressive, though not by a lot. The mop rotates quickly and makes use of 2.2lbs to clean dirt and stain. I've also noticed that the front arms protrude out a bit more than other robots, which can be helpful to maneuver around tight corners and along baseboards. The front arms can also be used to pick up larger debris like broken toys and books.

If you're a busy professional or someone who just wants an organized home that doesn't require much time doing chores The Shark Matrix Plus is a solid option. Its incredibly fast performance, sophisticated navigation and long battery life make it simple to maintain a clean house with little effort.

The Matrix Plus is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum and mop which means it can handle mopping and vacuuming. The robot comes with two modules: a combined dry bin and water reservoir and a separate mopping module with microfiber pads that snap into and out of position. It's not the most modern thing to have separate modules for mopping and vacuuming, but it does mean you don't have to worry about changing out disposable bags or refilling the tank of water.

Our test subjects found that the Matrix Plus did a great job at both vacuuming and mopping. Its greatest feature was its precise map of your floorplan, which it uses to determine a route when cleaning. It was easy for the Matrix Plus to navigate around furniture carpets, rugs and other obstacles. The app allows you to create 'No-Go Zones' as well as virtual barriers that prevent certain areas from being cleaned by mopping.

We also noticed that the Matrix Plus did surprisingly well at picking up hair from pets. It was able to collect some of the hair that shed by our cats, and even made it into the nooks and crannies on our stairs, where other robots have struggled. It was relatively quiet and even had some lovely jingles to signalled when it was about to start or finished its work.

The app was too simple and you had to change the modules every time you changed between vacuuming and mopping. The app doesn't have the capacity to store multiple maps, which can be a pain for homes with multiple floors. The Matrix Plus robot is a ideal choice for people who want a device that can vacuum and mop.

The Yiko X1 Omni

The X1 Omni is the most expensive robot vacuum that mops in our test, but it comes with some unique features that make it worth a look. The X1 Omni's main draw is its huge dock that doubles as a charging base and housing for two 4-liter water tanks, a sink for cleaning as well as the 2.5-liter dust bin that automatically emptys.

The base comes with a couple of buttons for control that let you manually begin a cleaning task or recall the robot, or use the dock's auto-emptying procedure. Hold down two of the buttons to toggle a child lock that is a great touch for parents worried about children playing with the vacuum.

The X1 Omni like other robotic vacuums uses its camera to identify obstacles and furniture that are in its path. It will stay clear of them. True Mapping 2.0 navigation maps your home up to four times faster than laser detection systems.

Unfortunately, this means that the X1 Omni could occasionally get caught up in obstacles, like a power cord draped across a rug--that it becomes stuck and stops working until you remove it manually. This was a rare incident however, it was a bit frustrating since the X1 does not have an "stuck status" alert on its application.

The X1 Omni cannot automatically switch from mopping to vacuuming mode during cleaning. You'll need to manually switch between the two modes, which isn't too bad but the mopping pad isn't washed or dried between uses. This can cause mildew and mold.

On the bright side it's worth noting that the X1 Omni is a beautiful-looking robot, thanks to the design team at Jacob Jensen (of Bang & Olufsen fame) who came up with its modern and sleek base as well as mopping pad. It's a significant departure from the utilitarian, all-black bases used by competitors like Roborock and iRobot and is a refreshing view in a market which is dominated by clunky boxy models.
