There are some issues however, which prevent them from being our first choice. One of them is that the Q5's navigation doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology, so it's prone to get caught up in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tightly packed rooms very efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't have cameras that let it see the corners of a room.

However, it's a good choice to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on a Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. It's also very quiet and can be used when you're at work or school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming that is available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on for long and don't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 does have a self-emptying dock, though. If you need to mop, the mopping pad can be swapped for an awe-inspiring one in a matter of seconds.

It's among our most attractive robot vacuums. iRobot's latest flagship model also happens to be its smartest model, with features that are cutting-edge like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology as well as future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can autonomously wash mop pads).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored 100% in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station, Best Robot Hoover and boasts an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models, the X40 is user-friendly, with a simple mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only issue is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This can be a concern in the mornings prior to work or in the evening when you're trying to fall asleep.

It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vac works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house depending on the degree of dirt they tend to be.

For bigger homes it's worth looking for a model with zone or spot cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean a specific area of your home by using the app or via voice commands. If you have lots of furniture, a stair mode is also a good option. Also a recharge and resume function that lets your robot vacuum pick up right where it left off is ideal for busy families.

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you would imagine from its price. It does a stellar job vacuuming, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion, which does a better job cleaning than the other mop cleaners for robots we've tested. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying base that is washable.

The iRobot application is designed to guide you through the mapping process which collects information about your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or to set up the spot-cleaning. It can also be used to it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance. The app also provides access to many features like seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.
