Group 0+

Car seats for infants are typically rear-facing and allow the baby to ride in the seat up to 15 months old. As with all car seats, it's essential that the seat you choose to use is compliant with European safety standards. You can look for the E-mark to ensure that the seat meets ECE R44/04 or iSize (which is set to replace the old regulation). This will help you to make sure that the seat is safe for your child from injury in a crash. Seats that are approved by i-Size are also more streamlined to fit, have better protection from side impacts and can keep your baby rear-facing for longer.

Designed for newborns up to around 15 months and up to about 15 months, the Maxi Cosi Pebble 360 Pro is a top option with outstanding crash test sensor results. It is one of the most simple installation methods thanks to its rigid LATCH connectors which change colour when properly connected. It also has a swivel base that helps to limit movement in the vehicle, and an inlay that hug the baby's neck, head and back to help maintain the proper posture.

Another option is the Cybex Aviounaut Pixel Pro, which also features an swivel base that can rotate 360 degrees and a unique G-CELL system that maintains safety in side-impacts. It's more expensive than other seats, but it gives superior protection and a great value. Jasper found it comfortable on long trips and it looks nicer than some of the other seats we tried, too.

Group 3

A group 3 infant seat is a three-in-one car seat that can be used from birth up to the booster stage. These seats start off rearward-facing (some until your child is at minimum 9kg) and can then be turned around to face forwards - they can be used in this way until they reach the limit of 36kg.

These seats are typically comfortable, and offer good head and neck support. Many of them come with removable and machine washable padding for newborns to help keep them clean. We wouldn't recommend swapping groups too early as children in the lower limits of each group may be more prone to injury in a crash so it's a good idea to hold on to your old seat until your child reaches their new limit. There are still some excellent options in this group. We recommend the Silver Cross Motion All Size 360 which will last your child until the 12th birthday of their child.

Cozy N Safe Arthur is another great option. It can help your child transition from the rotating infant car seat stage to the booster stage at 4 years old. It's not as costly as the most rated Silver Cross and has a variety of options for comfort and safety that include a single recline option and as many as 13 headrest positions.

Group 4

The infant seat in the group 4 is the most recent addition to our list of. It is designed for children from ages 0 to 6. It can either be used as an infant seat or in a rear-facing position. We rated this seat highly for its versatility and the possibility of being used without any base, making it perfect for taxi rides, fly-drive vacations or trips in hire vehicles or grandparents' vehicles. The ISOFIX connectors are built into the seat and click into the position with an enthralling click. It has a number of features that make it perfect for babies.
