The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored excellently in our tests of floors with no carpet and are especially adept in cleaning dog hair. They do have some flaws however, which hinder them from being our top choice. One of the weaknesses of the Q5 is that its navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's also prone to get stuck on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate through rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that can see around corners.

However, it's a good choice for those who want to save money on a iRobot Roomba and you have a mostly unfinished home or office. It's also quiet and can be used when you're at work or in school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming that is available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has an auto-emptying dock, however. If you're required to, the mopping pad can be replaced with one that is wet in just a few minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant vacuum cleaner that can mop floors. It's a bit more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but offers superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after it vacuums, a feature that we've not seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

This robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular design that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the bulky models of the competitors. It's one of our most attractive robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It comes with advanced features, like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the only robotic vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is due to the combination of modern sensors, including a restructured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot vacuum cleaner uk we tested that could refill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is easy to operate. It has an easy mobile application interface and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's still quite a noisy unit which could be an issue if you use it in the morning before work or in the evening as you attempt to sleep.

It's also a bit expensive, but it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are equally capable and look better. If you're willing to put up with a little more noise and a little more cost this is a powerful two-in-one that will satisfy most people.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot mop and vacuum. It has a number of advanced features that will make you forget about your chores. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take charge of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank, and cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot uses the combination of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and identify obstacles, and navigates more effectively than its more expensive competitors. It also has a camera mounted on the front for real-time detection of hazards, although this wasn't quite foolproof in our testing and was sometimes confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to do the job. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates how hard the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home in accordance with the amount of dirt they tend to be.

For larger homes it's recommended to choose a model with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a particular area of your house using the app or voice commands. A stairway mode is beneficial if you have number of furniture. For families that are busy recharge functions and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off could be very useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you might imagine from its price. It is a great job cleaning, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with a single pad that uses a reciprocating motion that does a better job cleaning than the other robot mop cleaners we've tested. It's also highly self-sufficient, with a fully-featured application, and a self-emptying base that can be washed.

The iRobot application is designed to help you navigate the mapping process, which gathers information on your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. You can use it to make cleaning schedules, set up an area for cleaning or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms to improve performance. The app offers a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.

It is also able to reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It features a powerful 8000 Pascal suction as well as clever combs for removing pet hair. And you can create a spot-clean that intensely cleans a localized area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and more affordable alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It's more appealing, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras appear like cute eyes.
