However unlike the i7+ and other top-rated robots we evaluated the i3+ does not have obstacle-avoidance capabilities, so it may get stuck on things such as power cords or socks, and it can have difficulty navigating across surface transitions like from hardwood to carpet.

iRobot suggests cleaning the area around the i3+ EVO vacuums prior to using it. This includes putting away any toys or other items it may encounter. It's also an excellent idea to keep the dustbin and filter clear so they aren't clogged by dirt. When the i3+'s internal bin is filled or the battery is low it goes back to its docking station, automatically empties its debris into the station's external dustbin, and then continues cleaning where it began. The i3+ EVO's battery can last for approximately an hour and a half continuous use, and it takes around three hours to fully recharge.

2. Roomba from iRobot

The iRobot i7+ is the top model in iRobot's flagship line and comes with the most recent features. It is self-charging and self-navigating, but the most important feature is its auto-emptying bin. This will eliminate the need for routine maintenance.

The Roomba I7+ is able to better map rooms with Imprint Smart Mapping. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning jobs, and you can control your robot via the app or via voice.

The i7+ is more efficient and more maneuverable in our tests than the eufy RoboVac G30. It also cleaned large pet hair pieces from all surfaces including carpeting. The biggest benefit over the eufy, though, is its self-emptying dustbin that removes a major source of maintenance and lowers the amount of time spent cleaning.

We were also impressed by the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services, which we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning sessions and to move around the room and sweep the area. Connecting the i7+ to these services was simple and straightforward using the iRobot Home app. Once connected, to give voice commands to the i7+ such as "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s preferences and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world of vacuums that are cordless and are like minivans and buses, this small Dyson model is an old-fashioned sports car. It's powerful enough to replace a stand-up vacuum in a majority of homes, but it is also compact enough to fit on a bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell energy-dense lithium-ion battery that produces continuous, non-fading power for 60 minutes. The sophisticated whole-machine filter system is able to trap allergens and then releases fresh air into your home. Its specialized cleaning head drives bristles of nylon that are stiff and deep into carpet to suck up large crumbs and fine dust. It comes with three suction modes to suit the task being performed. It swiftly switches from handheld to automatic floor cleaning machine vacuum, and then back to floor.

This model has a dock that can charge the Dyson to 100% within 3.5 hours. It also gives an easy access to two attachments as well as a wand. This is a major improvement over older Dysons which require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its short run time. The claims of its marketing that it can last up to 60 minutes of run time are a bit misleading as CR's tests have shown. One of iRobot's most adored robot vacuums the 694 is an entry-level model that's a great option for those who don't want to spend too much on a robot. It's capable of sucking up all types of debris and sizes during our testing, and it often goes over the same areas many times to give a thorough clean. Its flat front design allows it to reach corners and edges of walls.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt technology to avoid obstacles and navigate your home. However, it lacks the capabilities for mapping of more advanced models, such as our top picks, the i3+EVO and J7+ Series. It may get stuck on cords for phones or furniture that is low and will often run out of power before returning to its home base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways to the Roomba 694 in that it has fewer components that require regular cleaning, is outfitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, has a lower cost of recurring costs, has more advanced automation abilities and can better navigate itself. It also has a bigger dustbin, and charges more quickly.

The elegant RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 in most reasons, since it has a better battery life, has the ability to alter its suction power mode on its own, comes with physical boundary strips, and can be operated by your phone's voice assistant. It is also more robust, has a more powerful motor, and is more effective on floors with low pile and bare.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors, and it cleaned up 86% of dog hair (on carpet). However, it didn't do particularly well at avoiding higher-up objects like cords or socks which was a disappointment. It's also more expensive than the other models we tested, which might be a deal-breaker for some buyers.

The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that can be accessed via the app, and you can also create a live stream from the robot's cleaning station. This feature allows you to check in on pets or the kids if you're away from home. The dustbin and filter can be washed for quick, painless cleanup. The Jet Bot AI+ also has a clean station that's self-emptying to keep the robot's dustbin clear and optimizes its suction power for each cleaning.
