How to Replace an audi key fob replacement cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the most effective method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or audikey my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car can start when the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in, audikey but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know both the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. If you have any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is failing and needs replacing. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easy to find particularly when you're looking at a Bosch model, which is what we have. Alternately, GM's version this component is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's a vital component of the Audi A1 keys's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. If this sensor fails, it will disrupt the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and audikey - i thought about this, between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a common feature across the audi car key 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 DU You may also find some good ones in wrecking yards.Land-Rover.png
