For a long time, the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credibility. The silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to remove information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is just one aspect of how the development paradigm has evolved.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the changes in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their surroundings, which can cause variations in genes or even whole genomes. Over many generations these changes could lead to the emergence new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It explains how people with traits that are advantageous survive and reproduce more than those with disadvantageous ones. In time, this disparity in reproduction may lead to the emergence of entirely new species.

The word "evolution" comes from the Latin word"evolution" which means unraveling or revealing, however the concept itself has a myriad of meanings since it took form in the sciences and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that existing species evolve into new species in an orderly and predictable manner.

Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. In time the genetic variability could lead to the emergence of entirely new biological functions or physical traits in a population. Natural selection is the process that drives the most evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolution since they aren't passed on to future generations.

Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial, despite the fact that it has been proven valid by a multitude of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They claim that the theory shouldn't be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in high school textbooks. OECs are less well known, but they are as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a myth.

Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life began on Earth. They argue that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The founders of modern science shunned miracles in fear that they could lose their credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation. They refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." It is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." This theory states that God creates original species and allows them to change over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species that are similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event known as the Great Flood. They believe that the original species were created at the same time and that they grew slowly afterward. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.

In general, creationists oppose teaching evolution in schools. This position is supported by a variety of professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism, many of them think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high school textbooks recently announced that they would eliminate references to evolution in their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this drive. STR has won its first victory in removing instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx in textbooks. The next step is to remove portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research as well as on human evolution.

STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission is to cut out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of students in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has achieved many things through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences that has a creationist viewpoint, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught to this day.

On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science in major seminaries as well. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
