The democratic system in South Korea is susceptible to populist impulses. Nonetheless, it is healthier than one would expect.

Origins

On the other hand, supporters of the old system attempt to preserve it through nationalist sentiments, as well as by inflating fears about potential job losses.

Academics and analysts are divided over the extent to which Korea's evolution is being driven by these two trends. This article examines developments to date by analyzing five phases of Korea's political evolution including illiberal democracy (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and participatory democracy (2002 to the present). This article also identifies the key factors that are shaping these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made significant progress in promoting their beliefs to this segment. A survey from 2009 showed that nearly one-third of respondents did not believe in evolution. In the past, most of the anti-evolutionist movement in Korea was focused on educating college students and bringing them to Christ. A significant rise in interest in creation science began in the year 1980, when there was an all-day seminar that was held during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul which included Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the keynote speakers. The event was attended by a large number of pastors, professors, church leaders and scientists.

The success of the event led to the creation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31, 1980. The meeting was covered extensively in national newspapers including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter, CREATION, in which it covered its activities and published articles on the scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated several films and slides from ICR, as well as a few books on creationism that were in print outside of Korea. KACR members gave lectures in universities and churches across the country.

However his rule was not long-lasting. After his defeat, Gungye was replaced by a powerful local leader, Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935. Later, Baekje was incorporated peacefully into Goryeo as an alternative state. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened the central government system. This was the end of the Three Kingdoms Period. From that point the Korean peninsula was under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla gradually grew into powerful states on the peninsula as well as in Manchuria.
