Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to the sea.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her at risk. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as a relative in a plan that would eventually take her to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could spend the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and connect with their family members until death. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

Lolita is beautiful, but her health continues to decline. She's been a source of concern for animal welfare groups that wish to see her released to the wild. She has suffered from chronic illnesses and a crippling infection that has left her in a fragile condition.
