Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, [Redirect Only] activists have been pleading for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, activists believed that Lolita would have a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to sea.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her to be a family member in a plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could stay for the rest of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and connect with their family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

The first step of the training is System I. System II builds upon the foundations introduced in System 1 with exercises on equipment. It introduces teachers to exercises on the Spine Corrector and Magic Circle. This module comes with a manual, and a DVD featuring Lolita teaching you the System.

After you have completed the teacher training program at Lolita, you'll be prepared to teach the Pilates Method anywhere in the world! This course will allow you to work professionally, safely and efficiently with clients. You will gain a thorough knowledge of all exercises and how they interact. You will be able to apply this knowledge to any body and help your clients feel safe, strong and secure. Lolita's Diet

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they offer their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The orca, who was 57 years old, was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and while the species is endangered in the wild, she is in an aquarium that many say is too small for her.

Lolita's Health

It is unclear what specific health issues are affecting the orca, as her captor is not obliged to disclose the information. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the deaths of orcas in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health issues, many are hopeful that Lolita may be closer to a life in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to moving the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea, where she can swim deep in the water and possibly even be reconnect with her orca mother. Sadly, these plans came too late for the beloved whale, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a kidney issue.
