Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our bare floor tests, and they're particularly adept in cleaning pet hair. They do have some flaws, however, that prevent them from being our first choice. For one, the Q5's navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology which means it's susceptible to become entangled in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tight spaces very well in our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera to look around corners.

It's still a good value for those whose office or home has a lot of unfinished flooring and you're looking to save money. It's also very quiet and can be used when you're at work or in school. The only thing it doesn't have that you won't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective in mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. And, if you have to change the mopping pad to a dry one in seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into an elegant, compact package. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it quick to clean and efficient in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also has a powerful suction and an automatic bin for emptying. It's the best robot hoover (the full report) for carpets, however it's not as good as other hoovers when it comes to deep cleaning.

This high-performing mop and vacuum combination utilizes advanced sensors to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste, and it will learn the layout of your home over time for more efficient cleaning. It's more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, a built-in dust bin that automatically fills up its base, and it supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is something we haven't seen in other robotic vacuum/mop combinations.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

This mop and vacuum combination features a sleek, circular look that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the boxy models of the rivals. It is one of our most attractive robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also its smartest. It has advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company’s robot mop that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored a perfect 10 in our evaluations thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it has an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, offering a simple mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only issue is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This could be a problem in the mornings before work, or during the night when you are trying to sleep.

It's also a bit costly but not as expensive as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally capable and better looking. If you're willing to live with a bit more noise and a little more cost this is a capable two-in-one that should satisfy most people.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with many advanced features to help you forget about your chores. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that takes charge of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multifunction dock that automatically empties the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank and washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot employs the combination of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and spot obstacles, and navigates more effectively than its more expensive competitors. It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this was not reliable in our tests and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to accomplish the task. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and also adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home depending on the degree of dirt they tend to be.

For larger homes it's recommended to choose a model with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean one particular area of your house using the app or voice controls. A stair mode can be beneficial if you have lot furniture. Also the recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum take over exactly where it left off is ideal for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more advanced than the price suggests. It has a great vacuuming performance and was able to remove 55% of debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad and a rotating motion that is more efficient than most of the mop cleaners with robots that we've tried. It's self-sufficient too, with a fully-featured app as well as a self-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate an exercise in mapping which collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or to organize an automatic spot-clean. It can also be used to it to prioritize the most soiled areas to improve performance. The app comes with a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
