Path of Exile Item Upgrades

There are several different types of armor upgrades available in the game. Each has a different effect. In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade weapon and equipment sets has changed a bit. In the past you could go to an Upgrade Bench and pay a certain amount of Bars to upgrade your equipment or weapon to a higher rarity. You could do this until your weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level, at which point the upgrades would reset.

You can still do this however, the process is high on RNG and low on agency. You should consider buying equipment with minimal upgrade levels but with high base scores and stat distributions. These items have a greater likelihood of granting you most prestigious tier of blessings and perks.

To improve their skills faster, most players will prioritise upgrading their weapons. Players should also upgrade the weapons that their squadmates use to make them stronger. Shepard for instance should upgrade his M92F in order to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more effective when used in conjunction with biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are utilized in the sockets of armor and weapons, increasing the power of a character and bringing about secondary effects. The Jeweler can create all kinds of gems, apart from the rare and legendary ones that you must attain an appropriate level to obtain. Jewels can be replaced by another jewel without damaging the original. However, you can only replace the jewels in an equipment piece once.

Utilizing more jewels in the movement will make it more smooth, and is often done to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. Jewels also enhance performance and make an outer layer that is more durable than metal so that repeated friction from pivots do not cause damage to the movement.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the appearance of your weapons and shields. These provide a small bonus and can be swapped out at any time, but are not guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs, just like jewelry, can be upgraded by the Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs can also be taken out, which returns them to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits and aegis aren't swappable and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to provide your hero with a variety of small, but useful advantages. You can find them in the starting area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They can also be obtained through vendors and after completing road interaction. They may also be crafted by jewelers and later found or purchased from the Trading Post.

The first trinket that a player can unlock is the cloak. It provides a tiny, but useful bonus in speed of movement and evasion. Then, they can purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in the same fashion to how the player obtains weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that can accommodate either a universal or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be placed in any type of equipment, while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded, and only works with certain kinds of trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't fighting. This enables the hero to perform better when they are not active and also helps fill in the void of a solid team or the absence of any slots in the talent tree that would normally be filled with the hero's ideal stats.

A good general rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best item upgrade-in-Slot) items that you will not replace soon, followed by any items with desirable stats but less important than the iLevel of the item being upgraded. This is particularly true if an item has multiple stats that you wish to upgrade, as it's usually more beneficial to upgrade one important stat than two sub-optimal ones.

Jungle players will often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red one prior to the beginning of the game. Mid and top players however, will choose a green or a pink ward, depending on the game's matchup. These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's map control abilities.

Apart from the items listed above, players may also find other trinkets in the game in the form of awards and trophies. They can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story, such as finishing a chapter's main quest or killing a particular boss.
