Alex the African Grey Parrot

When animal psychologist Irene Pepperberg entered a Northwest Side pet shop in 1977 and bought an exuberant one-year-old African grey parrot named Alex She began a 30-year experiment that altered the way we think about the intelligence of birds. He also understood the meaning behind words, a feat which was uncommon for birds. When he heard the word "grape", he knew that it was not a vegetable but a fruit. This was due to the way that Dr. Pepperberg taught him words. She along with a colleague would take on the role of teacher and student. Alex observed and listened. He was rewarded for correct pronunciation and definition with the object associated with the word.

She also taught Alex the meanings of words, not just the sounds. This was an innovative method as pet parrots typically only learn words to enhance their novelty. The owners don't mean what they say when they use a specific word. However, with Alex when he spoke a certain word, he truly meant what he said.

Some scientists believe that it is unfair to make comparisons between Alex with humans in terms of intelligence. They have pointed out that while Alex was able to communicate but he didn't have the ability to comprehend logic-based expressions such as "if there is x, then there must be y."

Alex's research into animal consciousness and intelligence is controversial. When he died in 2007 at 31 years of age Alex was among the most well-known talking parrots of all time.

What was Alex like?

Alex was an extremely violent member of a gang who loved brutal actions. Despite his vicious tendencies, Alex was a likable character, and seemed to relish the power he possessed over his fellow hoodlums. He was a narcissist to two things in his life: violence and classical music, especially Beethoven who's music always brought up images of blood and depravity to him. He also was known to drink the milk that was spiked with drugs which the gang members and he would then use to prepare themselves for their "ultraviolence."

Alex's background as a parrot in a pet shop was not exceptional however, it served him well. Alex was quick to master words and concepts from his human trainer, Irene Pepperberg. Her thirty-year study of him changed the way we think about animal cognition and communication. She acknowledges Alex with teaching her how to apply the model that worked for animals as well as children with learning disabilities.

Dr. Pepperberg continued her research with other parrots, including Wart and Griffin. She is currently a professor at the University of Washington, where she continues her pioneering work with birds.

Even after his death, he continues inspiring people around the world. Free Solo is a film about Alex and his incredible achievements in climbing. This film has received much critical acclaim, and is regarded as one of the greatest documentaries ever produced. It has also received numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in the year 2019.

In addition to his work with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also set the standard for new avenues in bird intelligence. He was able perform more than 100 vocal labels for objects and actions. He was also capable of counting up to six object sets and displayed math skills that were advanced in the time for a bird.

He was also able to communicate with other animals by using sign language, and he had a good grasp of grammar. He utilized a method of teaching called "rival model" which involved two trainers showing the bird what they wanted to teach it. The trainers changed positions often so that the bird was capable of interacting with both of them and receive attention and rewards from each of them.

After the success of Free Solo, Alex was given the title of National Hero by President Barack Obama in 2014. Alex was able accomplish so much in his lifetime due to his determination of character, and his determination to live life to the fullest.
