Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Item upgrading allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear with new affixes, increasing the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Items that have weak bases, such as rings, can be upgraded into more robust bases. Items with strong bases, such as eth Titans have little changes in their stats.

Upgrade components are items that can be used to upgrade trinkets, weapons, armor and gathering tools, giving an added bonus or effect when the equipment is used. They can be purchased from vendors, or found as loot by enemies, or received from chests and missions. Some upgrades additionally have special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be above a certain level before they are upgraded.

To upgrade the quality of a weapon, armor or other item in the game, the player must select it and then click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will display on the right-hand side of the screen a preview of the expected upgrade statistics and the necessary component or materials.

There are three types of upgrade components including universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, like gems, can be put on any type of equipment. They offer a lower bonus than upgrade components that have a specific type restriction. Infusions are gems that are only available in legendary and ascended equipment. They provide the same benefits as jewels, but cannot be used in other equipment. Suffix upgrades are able to be placed in gathering tools, add their name to the end of the name of the item they are connected to, for example adding the word Glyph to the Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor will make it a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and replaces the glyphs with a different one the old one will be returned to their inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component will destroy it, with the exception of inscriptions which can be freely swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system differs from the previous versions in a few fundamental ways. Gear is now divided into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a specific number of times before being "leveled out." The cost of upgrading is increased with each level however, the materials needed don't increase as much. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a select few items and maximize the impact of those items, instead of dispersing upgrade costs across multiple pieces.

If an item is completed and is leveled out, it will be eligible for a new set of upgrade components, and a boost in the chance that the upgrade will succeed. This bonus is referred to as the Artisan's Energy, and it resets to 0 after failure or increases if the upgrade succeeds.

When a piece of equipment is upgraded to its maximum level, it will be able to gain affixes which will increase its features. The number of affixes that are available will depend on the type of item it is. For instance, a rare or unique weapon with a base that is normal will have no more than two affixes for it, while legendary armors can have up to eight affixes for it.

Each upgrade step will require a certain number of Flightstones and crests depending on the current level of the item and the item upgrades slot it's in. Weapons typically require more Flightstones than other equipment.

If an item does not reach its max level, the NPC will give players the option to transfer it to a different character and then re-infuse it with another set of upgrades. This process can take up to two hours, and costs the same amount of materials. However, it has a lower chance of success.

Engineers may employ a level to compare the height of the building against an established point, like the benchmark. This process is called a "level loop." This involves taking readings using the level, backsighting rod and then turning the level to take the foresighting rod reading. This method ensures that structures are built to the highest level of accuracy and safety.

Rerolling

Rerolling is the process of altering the upgrade components of an item. It is a vital aspect of the game and can drastically increase the strength of an item or damage, as well as other attributes. You can do this through the menu for items, or by pressing the Reroll button whenever you upgrade an item. Rerolling items can be expensive and should be handled with care.

Sets
